Since 2021, Prof. Zobel is chair of the Institute of Crystallography at RWTH Aachen University, and since 2024 she is concurrently director of the JCNS-3 – Neutron Analytics for Energy Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Her research focusses on the structure and dynamics of complex nanostructured interfaces constituted of multiple phases as they occur in nano- and energy materials including heterogeneous catalysts.
She has been chair of the German neutron user representation KFN from 2023-2026, advocating the urgent need for more neutrons. This requires a healthy network of international flagship facilities such as ILL and ESS, complemented by national sources. HiCANS (High Current Compact Accelerator-Based Neutron Sources) are desparately required as a resilient modular concept to combat neutron shortage.
Before her move to Aachen, Prof. Zobel studied chemical engineering and did her PhD in crystallography in Erlangen, succeeded by an assistant professorship in solid state chemistry at the University of Bayreuth.
